Overview

The Assegai was mounted on DT Swiss M1900 rims with a 30mm internal width. My typical riding terrain includes the dry, rocky conditions of the Colorado mountains, with occasional trips to Moab, Sedona, and Bella Vista. For context, I’m a middle-aged rider weighing about 190 lbs, with a background in motocross. I’ve been riding since 1988—not a pro or racer, just a passionate trail enthusiast.

I chose the Assegai for its reputation as a high-traction front tire, something the Dissector didn’t deliver for me. While the Dissector felt unpredictable and didn’t give me enough warning before losing grip, I hoped the Assegai would inspire more confidence.

Installing the Maxxis Assegai was incredibly simple. I let the tire sit in the sun to soften before cleaning the rim. The bead seated easily without the need for tire levers, and I added sealant through the valve core. The process was leak-free and hassle-free.

I also mounted the new EXO+ Dissector on the rear, and both tires were ready for a test ride.

My first ride was on my usual front-range trail, starting with a climb (as most rides do here). After about 20 minutes, I stopped to check the tire pressure and inspect for leaks—everything was in great shape.

Initially, I noticed a slight increase in rolling resistance. This wasn’t surprising since I upgraded to the EXO+ casing for added sidewall protection and stiffness, which adds weight. Additionally, new tires often feel slower until the tread blocks and casing break in. By the end of the ride, the tires felt faster and more responsive.

Descending a trail I’ve ridden hundreds of times, I immediately noticed a big improvement in cornering. The MaxxGrip compound delivered exceptional traction in loose corners, allowing me to push harder and maintain more control. The feedback from the tire was fantastic, and I felt confident knowing exactly when it was nearing its limit.

While the Dissector often felt vague, the Assegai provided precise feedback and grip throughout the turn. The tip-in on corners was faster than I was used to, but I adjusted quickly.

The soft compound excelled on rocky and rooted sections, providing plenty of grip on both stable and loose surfaces. On slick or loose rocks, the tire's stickiness really shined, giving me more confidence in technical sections. However, softer knobs are more prone to wear, especially on sharp or jagged terrain, so I’ll keep an eye on long-term durability.

The Maxxis Assegai is a fantastic upgrade for riders tackling varied terrain. It excels in dry, loose conditions and provides unmatched confidence in technical sections. For my style and bike, it’s a significant improvement over the Dissector as a front tire. The move to the EXO+ casing was also worthwhile for extra durability and stability. While the Assegai’s soft compound may wear faster, I’m happy to trade longevity for improved grip, safety, and fun.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Easy installation: Mounted without tire levers and sealed perfectly.
  • Exceptional grip: Tackles loose corners, rocks, and roots with ease.
  • Feedback: Communicates well, allowing you to push confidently.
  • Durability upgrade: EXO+ casing adds sidewall stiffness and protection.

Cons

  • Rolling resistance: Slight drag during the break-in period.
  • Wear rate: Soft compounds wear faster (expected with MaxxGrip).

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a grippy front tire that inspires confidence in technical terrain, the Maxxis Assegai 27.5 x 2.5, EXO+, MaxxGrip is an excellent choice. It’s a perfect match for my Pivot Shadowcat, and I’m excited to see how it holds up over time. For riders prioritizing grip over longevity, this tire is a game-changer.
