The winter season also means shorter days, and for those who love to ride bikes after work, it becomes harder. However, NiteRider offers a wide variety of headlights for those riders who want to still go hit the trails after sunset. See what our customer thinks of the NiteRider lights.
Currently a 41 year old father of two and tenured first responder, I would classify myself as fit but not ready to hit the Downieville Classic or the Whiskey Offroad 50 Proof rides quite yet although I am training for the Tucson Lemmon Drop and Moab Whole Enchilada. I’ve been “mountain biking” since 2012 but only started calling myself a Mountain Biker since 2020. I know what you’re thinking…. Covid Rider. Believe it or not, it’s ironic, but didn’t work out that way. Starting out on a XC 29er as my first ever “mountain bike” $1200 was a lot of money in 2012 and all I wanted to do was ride with my friends. Fast forward to 2019 and I finally “grew out” of my old bike and really started exploring upgrades.
After saving money for an entire year, I found a smoking deal and dropped the hammer on my quiver killer that is a Pivot Switchblade. Right after Pivot changed the geometry and hardware spec to the 2020 and later models, I found a great bike that has been 100% awesome and worth it in every way. This happened right before Covid hit and shut the world down. It was a time when we as humans weren’t quite sure what was going on but still masking “just in case” Then Covid shut the world down and I just so happened to have a shiny new bike to hit the trails wherever I could. I fell in love all over again and began exploring trails anywhere I could, as often as possible.
Fast forward again to Summer 2023, after hundreds of hours biking on many trails, many trips to my Mecca (Sedona) and many skills clinics/coaching sessions and I was offered a coaching position on a local NICA team. Nervous at first, and not as confident I would seem qualified to coach, I set out with an open mind and one goal, share the stoke. Since the season starts in the fall, and practices are after work during the week, it gets dark during practice, which brings me to my review. Our Team’s Managing Head Coach kept preaching to “bring lights, BRING LIGHTS” Since the first few practices weren’t “that dark” by the end, I still didn’t have a light. It wasn’t until it got dark on a ride, and I found myself following another coach off trail that I decided it was time to brighten things up.
User Review:
Thanks to the fellas at Worldwide Cyclery and their very handy review online, I went with two sets of lights, hoping I could get my son to join the team I was coaching. Two NiteRider Lumina Max 2500s and two NiteRider Lumina Micro 900s (2500 for bars and 900 for helmets) were the products I decided I would use to begin my night riding coaching venture.
Price wise, the sets were very affordable and only topped by the topmost “top tier” products. Since my son decided not to join the team this year, I found myself mounting both Lumina Max 2500’s to my bars and one of the Lumina Micro’s to my helmet, carrying the second in a pack. I can use one bar light at a time for longer rides, or fire up both, and raise the sun when leading kids on group rides. I am still playing with bar/helmet settings configurations to optimize output for the majority of rides our team does but have had great success with the lights overall.
On the darkest of nights, the low setting is plenty light enough, coupled with a helmet light, to confidently ride, especially leading a group who also have lights on. On clear, moonlit nights, I have found brighter light settings are needed as the lower light settings don’t seem “viewable” or making much of a difference against the moonlight. Never having really ridden at night, and never with lights, I wasn’t sure what to expect but these lights are impressive. Even with two bar lights AND a helmet light pointed forward there doesn’t seem to be any “hot-spotting”
The lights came with mounts and mounting them to bars/helmet was easy and I easily found great placement to optimize our night adventures. After about a month of solid use, and counting, these lights are still going strong and put out consistent light, at each setting, if battery life remains. Even the bright setting stays bright, all the way through the charge, versus slowly dimming as the battery charge depletes like some less quality brands. I have yet to run a light completely out of charge, our group rides easily last at least one hour and I bet I could push them much longer. I predict a field test in my future.
Overall, I have been impressed with the level of customer service and dedication to customer satisfaction from the folks at Worldwide Cyclery. I have been impressed by the quality of product and value/features for the money in the lights I bought and although I will be sad when the day comes the lights will need to be retired, I look forward to returning to WC for an upgrade when the time does come.
