Our excellent customer Tommy wanted to get really low on his stem, so he gave the Cane Creek Slamset a go. Check out what he has to say about it.
I recently got an Ibis Ripmo which is an awesome bike. However, a 29er running a 160mm fork leaves you with no way getting around a tall stack height. I wanted to bring the handlebars as low as possible to get a comfortable setup.
A couple mm makes a huge difference in bike setup and getting a Slamset drops stack height an extra 5mm from Cane Creek's standard zero stack headset. This allowed me to get the bars as low as possible which put me in a more comfortable position to get more weight on the front of the bike. My setup still feels comfortable on steep terrain even with the bars set up as low as possible.
If you cut your steerer tube too short the Cane Creek Slamset headset might rescue you out of a jam also and save you from having to get a whole new upper crown assembly.
Installation is just like a regular headset but in speaking with the Cane Creek guys at Sea Otter, they did mention that the cups are slightly thinner than their other headset cups so even more extra care has to be taken to make sure the cups are pressed in straight.
Another plus to the Slamset is Cane Creek utilizing their stainless steel Hellbender bearing which is a more durable bearing than their standard 40 series bearing. The Hellbender bearings have extra ball bearings compared to Cane Creek's traditional headset bearing and has even better sealing due to the low stack height of the Slamset.
All in all, I would recommend the Slamset if you really want to drop handlebar height to get a more comfortable setup.
