Over the years, SRAM's X01 Eagle drivetrain has proven to be one of the top drivetrains to have. Not only is performance is top notch, so is the durability. Our customer wrote up a review about the X01 rear derailleur. See what they think!
I've been riding with the SRAM X01 derailleur for over a month now, and I wanted to share my honest take on how it has performed in real-world conditions. As a baseline, I will be comparing it to a Sram NX derailleur, both on a X01 cassette with an X01 chain. Let's get straight to the point without getting overly carried away.
Installation
First off, the installation process was fairly straightforward. I'm not a bike mechanic by any means, but am confident in my abilities. After watching a youtube video, I got it installed and it shifted okay. I ended up tinkering with the high and low limit screws and got it shifting flawlessly.
Shifting
The SRAM X01 definitely brings some improvements to the table. The gear changes feel smoother and more precise compared to my previous derailleur. It's not a night-and-day difference, but there's a noticeable improvement, especially during those quick shifts on the trail. Climbing hills felt a bit easier, and the transitions between gears were more seamless. It's a subtle enhancement, but it does contribute to an overall more enjoyable riding experience.
Reliability
Speaking of the trail, the SRAM X01 held up well during my rides. It handled the various terrains and challenges I encountered without any major hiccups. The shifts remained consistent, even when I was pushing my limits on technical sections. I even banged it against a log and I didn't notice any changes in the shifting. While the X01 didn't necessarily improve my mountain biking skills, it did contribute to a feeling of increased stability and control on the trails
Price
Now, let's talk about the price. The SRAM X01 comes with a higher price tag compared to some other options out there. Is it worth the investment? Well, that depends on your expectations. If you're looking for significant performance leaps, you might not find the X01 to be a revolutionary game-changer. However, if you appreciate refinements and incremental upgrades, the X01 could be right up your alley. It's not really a budget-friendly choice, but if you're willing to invest in a smoother shifting experience and added durability, it is most definitely worth considering.
Weight
In terms of weight, the SRAM X01 is the 2nd lightest compared to all of the other cable actuated eagle derailleurs. It is second only to the XX1 derailleur, the highest quality derailleur SRAM produces. While you will not be able to feel the decreased weight, it is nice knowing that you are shaving grams while simultaneously improving your bike.
Overall, the SRAM X01 derailleur is a solid upgrade for riders seeking enhancements to their biking experience. The reliability and the smoother shifts were a very nice welcome. The setup process was user-friendly, and the performance remained consistent during various riding conditions. While the price might deter some, those who value incremental improvements and refined performance can find value in this derailleur. For those big rides up the mountains or even on local singletrack, you will want the best shifting experience and the SRAM X01 rear derailleur delivers!
