Selecting the right shock your bike can take a bit of work as there are so many options available these days. Read on as our friend Esteban tells us why he decided to go for a Rockshox Coil on his next build.
It all started when I switched to a coil shock on my old Kona Process 153 from 2015. I just loved the feeling of that Vivid on my bike. I then tried different coil shocks (DVO Jade, Ohlins TTX22M, and Avalanche Woodie), but none of them felt like the Vivid. With this, I figured out that I would prefer any RockShox coil shock in the future. First I did an upgrade to the shock, then the fork, then wheels, transmission, handlebar, stem… pretty much everything but the dropper post and the frame.
3 years later I thought that it was a good time to get a new frame. The only problem was that new frames have new standards, so not all of my late upgrades were gonna fit the new frame. First was the metric rear shock and the boost spacing for the wheels. I had no problem finding adaptors for both wheels, but finding a coil shock with a specific size and tune for a frame was going be the hardest task.
Once I fell in love with one frame (2019 Commencal Clash), it was time to find the right shock for it. Since Commencal is not delivering the new line till November. That gave me time to find the super-specific metric rear shock. What I did first was to go to the RockShox web site to check out the new Super Deluxe Coil RCT and see where could I buy it, but I realized it said: “This product is installed on bicycles as original equipment only, it is not sold separately”. It was the saddest moment of my mountain bike life. The only shock I wanted was not available. But I was not gonna give up there. My first option was buying it used on Pinkbike, but finding the right size and tune for the Clash was almost impossible. Like a little boy wandering in the desert, I gave it a try… I googled “RockShox Super Deluxe Coil RCT Commencal Clash”, and sweet mother of carbon wheels… there it was. WorldWideCyclery was google’s first choice. Clicked on it and bought it right away. The right size and the right tune for my future bike. I still do not have the frame, but that is just a matter of time. The guys at WWC shipped it right away, and they even included the mounting hardware with it!! I came looking for silver and I found gold.
Talking now about the feeling of a coil shock, I do not want to get dirty here so I am gonna keep it as classy as possible, It is like making love to the love of your life without a condom… what is that? Just the best feeling ever. Period. If you are still using an air shock, I would recommend trying out a coil shock. If you like it, which you will, go to the WWC website and let them know you are looking for a specific shock. They will guide you and tell you what is best for you. Thanks, WWC!
