Have you ever thought about servicing your own suspension. For our customer Rob Oranges, purchasing all of the necessary service tools, damper bleed kits, oils, and grease, was an investment worth making. Check out how Rob managed to service his Rockshox Pike fork for the first time.
Front fork full service... How hard could this be? Come to find out, the hardest part was determining the exact year my fork was produced so that I could order the correct service kit. The rest was fairly simple! I referenced the service guide from my fork MFG (Rockshox Pike...) and there was a list of parts that I would need to purchase. Worldwide Cyclery had by far the best selection of shock service kits and supplies. Finding the correct service kit can be a bit confusing but Worldwide Cyclery's website had clear and understandable product descriptions so I was confident in ordering without having to call and ask questions.
Once I received the goods, I pulled up a Youtube video and followed the written instructions from the service guide. Taking my time, the whole process took about an hour on my first try so, not a daunting task at all. This was also a great opportunity to upgrade, so I bought some bottomless tokens to customize my setup. The bottomless tokens were an easy add-on as well. The whole experience was very interesting, I like seeing how things are made and operate so it gave me a much better understanding of my bike.
First, you will need a good bike stand or a table mount to secure your fork. An oil pan, lint-free towels, isoprophyl alcohol, gloves and a few other supplies before attempting a fork service. The right tools and MFG recommended grease and oils are needed as well. I looked at the whole process as an opportunity to build up my home shop to be able to service the family's bikes. A full shock service probably cost as much as what I spent to get up and running, but now I have everything I need to perform shock service on every bike we own. I'll save hundreds of dollars each year!
Give it a try... It is definitely an investment, but the return on that investment will come quickly!
