Carrying essential items on the trail used to be a tedious task having to load up your pockets or even carry around a giant backpack. Today we have nifty straps like these Backcountry Research Mutherload Straps to put those essential tools directly on your bike. Saving you the trouble of loading up before every ride. Our friend Wyatt recently purchased a strap. Let's see what he thinks!
Over time I have trimmed down the amount of gear I take on my rides to only the essentials and as a result, have reduced the size of the packs I wear. I started with a large backpack style hydration pack that can fit everything and am now rocking the love it or hate it, infamous fanny pack and have no regrets. While I have room to fit everything, one thing that takes up a lot of space is a tire tube. Even though it fits, accessing items can be a pain since everything is crammed together and involves taking out the tire tube to access whatever item I may need. I tried to remedy this by using some simple frame straps, the ones that are like a belt, but decided to abandon them after losing a couple of tire tubes out on the trail. Becoming increasingly annoyed with the tire tube taking up so much space in my fanny pack and not wanting to go back to some other larger pack, I decided to look for a different solution and found the Backcountry Research Mutherload Frame Strap.
I ordered the Mutherload Strap in black but had a tough time choosing what color/pattern I wanted because there were so many awesome options. Ultimately, I decided on black since black goes well with everything and I wanted it to mix with the bikes I may have in the future, whatever color they may be. The strap has a very quality feel to it and feels like it will last many seasons to come. Plus, it’s built in the USA which is awesome. Attaching the strap to the bike is straightforward with directions on Backcountry’s website. I am using the strap to hold a tire tube and mini pump to my bike and so far I have no complaints. The strap stays on solidly and doesn’t slip and the design allows stuff to get really cinched down.
The strap is also easy to remove from the bike and still allows for everything to be bundled together so nothing needs to be repacked or reorganized.
This is really handy is you are transferring the strap from bike to bike or if you are going to wash your bike. One thing to note which is inherent of frame straps in general is to watch for grit getting under the surfaces making contact with the frame as over time this could cause wear on the paint. For those who don’t want the paint to get worn, using some frame tape where the Mutherload Strap would cinch to would be a good solution.
"The Backcountry Research Mutherload Frame Strap is a great piece of equipment for rides who are looking to reduced the amount of space taken up in their pack or reduce how much weight they are carrying on their person. I’d highly recommend this product to anyone and would happily buy more from Worldwide Cyclery." - Wyatt
