Dropper post levers have slowly become a very personal preference, and a lot of companies are creating really well machined dropper post levers. One of our favorites is WolfTooth. Our friend, William has been running it. See what they think!

Overall

I purchased the Wolf Tooth components dropper remote for Shimano I spec II to replace a Fox transfer lever that came installed on a new bike. I had previously heard nothing but good things about it, but wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary. I have used a few different brands of levers before but none of them really impressed. I have to say that the construction is first rate. It has a solid feeling right out of the package. It’s obviously well thought out from the adjustability to the no pinch cable attachment. The ball bearing pivot makes the actuation so silky smooth. You can raise and lower the post as fast or as slow as you like. The machined surface of the thumb lever itself makes for a no slip thumb contact point under any conditions. Another selling point would be the break away between the lever and the mount. I’m hoping to never use that feature. It’s also great to support American manufacturing whenever possible and Wolf Tooth is exactly that.

Installation is pretty straightforward and there are videos online if you can’t figure something out. On an existing install I would definitely recommend a new inner cable. It’s not worth trying to reuse when they aren’t that expensive to begin with. I disconnected the old lever, removed the dropper and replaced the inner cable before reinstalling. I then pulled the cable and housing back through the internal frame routing. I tightened up the cable and then depressed the lever about ten times as recommended to stretch the new cable. I re tightened and no further adjustment with the barrel adjuster was necessary. I had only to adjust the fore/aft adjustment to get the angle of the lever the way I like it. It is also adjustable in and out, you can loosen a pinch style bolt to slide it to where your thumb needs it.

Final Thoughts

I can’t really think of any reason not to use the Wolf tooth dropper lever. It’s the class of the field and there are many choices. Some levers do some things well but not others. The Wolf Tooth has it all, quality, function, looks. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for an upgrade. It’s the little things that make the biggest difference.
