There is no worse feeling than your mountain bike brakes fading or losing power on you during a ride. That is why it's crucial that you do a brake bleed once in a while. In this review, our friend Anthony shares his thoughts on the SRAM Pro Disc Brake Bleed Kit. Check it out!
I bought a full suspension trail bike and the bike was equipped from the factory with SRAM Level brakes. The bike had a 180 mm rotor in the front and 160 mm in the rear. After riding and getting used to bikes I decided bigger better brakes were needed. My research led me to switch to larger rotors and upgrading my brake system. I decided on going to a 200 mm rotor in the front and 180 mm rotor in the back using 20 mm post adapters (also bought through Worldwide Cyclery). As far as the baking system rather than going to the higher model of the Level series (ie. Level Ultimate) I wanted to go with a 4 piston caliper I decided to go with the SRAM G2 RSC based on reviews and talking with friends. I placed an order for the complete G2 RSC system through Worldwide Cyclery the package arrived quickly and installed it on my bike promptly.
The front brake went on quickly with a simple exchange of the Level for the G2 with a few bolts. The rear line had to be run through the frame of the bike and the brake line had to be disconnected and bled of fluids secured back in place and filled with a full brake bleed service. When purchasing the brake system I saw the need for the brake bleed kit so I could perform the work myself. The SRAM Pro Disc Brake Bleed Kit set me up for success in that regard. The kit came with everything I needed to perform the job from start to finish. I watched one video online on a general overview of how to perform the task at hand.
With everything being supplied in the kit I did not have to improvise any steps or tooling.
I was able to achieve a good brake bleed on the first attempt with a good solid feel in the lever, no air bubbles appeared in the bleed kit. The process was so easy in fact I was able to trim the brake line down in length on the front brake with confidence. It also allowed for me to replace the brakes on my wife’s bike (mechanical disc) with the old hydraulic units I was replacing, with her being lighter they were perfect for her and an upgrade for her bike. I was able to perform all the brake services with ease and had every tool at my disposal. I took a ride around my neighborhood to make sure everything was working properly and I noticed an immediate difference on a simple road ride.
The first trail ride the increased brake performance was apparent and satisfying to know I performed the work myself. Also allows me the ability to perform preventative maintenance for my wife and myself avoiding paying shop fees and with the work already performed the kit has paid for itself.
