When we first heard about the SRAM Mavens and what they were planning on doing with the brakes, we were very excited to say the least. Since being released, it seems like these brakes are in the top 5 brakes for power. See what our customer thinks about them!!

Overview

I have been looking to replace the stock brakes on my bike since I purchased it. While searching online, I came across the release video for the SRAM Maven Expert Kit. I immediately ordered it the next morning through Worldwide Cyclery. It did take a few months to fill the order, but the team at Worldwide kept me in the loop the whole time. Shout out to Cody!

My Ibis Ripmo came equipped with SRAM G2s. For reference, I’ve been running Formula brakes for the past several years. The Formula brakes seemed to have more bite than the G2s. I did adjust to the SRAM brakes after a few rides and then came to appreciate the modulation. But, I still wanted more power. Enter the Mavens.

Holy caliper, Batman! Not everyone will be a fan of the look, but I dig the industrial design and the red. The red splash anodized calipers are currently only offered in the expert kit. They are much larger and more prominent than the G2 calipers. The lever bodies are part of SRAM’s stealth line. I’m also a fan of how they hug the handlebars. I’m currently not using any AXS components, but this setup would help reduce the spaghetti monster of cables in the front of the bike if I choose to go with AXS in the future.

Installation was straightforward for those who have gone through the process before. The expert kit comes with four new HS2 rotors, sizes 180mm-220mm. I was already running the HS2 rotors and went with SRAM’s recommendation to keep the stock sizes on my bike. I have the 200mm in the front and 180mm in the rear. The only issue I had during installation was following the directions. I didn’t adjust the contact point to the correct position on the rear brake, which trapped too much air in the system while bleeding. This led me to go through the bleeding process again for the rear. And yes, the expert kit comes with the mineral oil bleed kit from SRAM. Zang!

I have a strict performance-to-dollar ratio when spending money on upgrades. Actual math is not used, but there needs to be a wow factor. And I will say, the Mavens have it. There is a very noticeable difference in how the brakes perform. The Mavens seem to require less force to engage the calipers, and engage they do. Stopping power is increased over the G2s (as it should be). I wish I could compare them to the Codes, but I don’t have any experience riding them. I’m honestly surprised my bike didn’t have the Codes equipped on the build, but I generally go for the budget build and upgrade as I go. Overall, the Mavens do what they are designed for: to slow down and stop. I haven’t experienced any of the fatigue others have mentioned while using the Mavens. I’m guessing that means I need to ride steeper and longer trails. These are a definite upgrade from what I was riding. I’ve only had them for about a month and I’m still making small adjustments on the contact point and lever reach, but I have been extremely happy.

The best thing about riding bikes is... riding bikes. We have a ton of options when it comes to bikes and parts. Personal preference is what makes the ride more enjoyable for the individual. These brakes won’t be for every rider, either because of looks or feel, but I’m glad they’re on my rig slowing my out-of-control @$$ down.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the SRAM Maven Expert Kit has proven to be a substantial upgrade from my previous brakes. With their increased stopping power, appealing design, and ease of installation (despite a minor hiccup), they’ve significantly enhanced my riding experience. While they might not be everyone’s cup of tea due to their bold look and feel, they certainly deliver in performance. For anyone considering a brake upgrade, especially those looking for a balance of power and modulation, the Mavens are worth a serious look. Happy riding!
