When it comes to trying to upgrade or find the right brakes for your needs. SRAM has your back with a plethora to choose from that fill different needs and wants. Our friend, Calvin, just picked up some G2 RSC brakes. See what they think.
I was originally using SRAM TLM Level that was spec-ed on my Tallboy V3. Having used it for 3 years, with interval servicing down in between, I realized that it was no longer cost-effective to do a major overhaul of the brake system, which would cost as much as 30% of a brand new and better brake set. as well as the downtime involved. I do not want my bike to get stuck at the LBS, not even 1 day.
Coming from using SRAM brakes and bleed kit, I decided to go stick to the brand that had served me well so far and without the hassle of buying a new bleeding kit. I was looking for a more powerful brake (upgrade from 2 pot to 4 pot) and the ability to adjust reach and contact point, I was down to the selection of SRAM Code RSC and G2 RSC. Considering the type of riding I do, which is mostly trail, and the price point, it was no-brainer to select the G2 RSC for the more value for money option.
Installation
The outlook of the G2 RSC is matte black, and the reach knob and contact point wheel adjusters look well-placed and easy to adjust. I would think a gloss black would make it look much better though, Installation was pretty straightforward. Personally not exactly an experienced bike mechanic, but I managed to install the brakes without any issues. The only gripe was that I had thought that I could avoid bleeding it since it was pre-bled, but I believe it was needed because I lost some brake fluid while cutting the hose.
Riding it!
Next was to run in the pads, and then off to the trails!
My first ride impression was, wow!
Amazing brake feel! With the smooth modulation and lever ergonomics (thanks to the reach and contact point adjustability), I could now fine-tune to my liking, as and when I need to. This was something missing so much from my TLM Level. SRAM brakes as they are, the initial bite is usually relatively gentle, which allows you to feel the brake better without locking up the front wheel inadvertently. The braking power comes thereafter and brake modulation is one of the finest in the market. Having ridden these brakes for more than 2 months, I would say it was money well spent!
The G2 RSC is a fine trail brake, for casual riders who need more stopping power when the situation calls. I love the ample power and smooth feel through the lever. I am currently running on the 180mm disc and organic pads. I will next upgrade to a 200mm front hope disc and sintered pads for the next change and hope to squeeze more braking power out of it. Braking is so much more confident now. Anyone who is currently using a 2 pot system, should upgrade to a 4 pot no matter what, and choose SRAM and you will never go wrong.
