Well, ladies and gentlemen, it only took Shimano about six years to follow up with their own version of an electronic drivetrain. After SRAM released their first version of AXS. And a lot of the guys around here were even wondering if they were ever going to release one in the first place. It's been 84 years. Well, they finally did, and we have it right here behind me, so stay tuned to find out if it was actually worth the wait.

00:00:22:10 - 00:00:26:09
JARED
Yeah.

00:00:26:11 - 00:00:48:10
JARED
Like I said, it took Shimano some time for them to release their version of electronic drivetrain. But as we know with Shimano, they're pretty conservative. They like to take their time with things, and when they release something, they typically do it right. So with that said, I have been riding Shimano's XTR version of the Di2 wireless drivetrain for little over six months and nearly 1000 miles now, and it's been on two different bikes.

00:00:48:10 - 00:01:06:23
JARED
I've had multiple configurations, and we're going to go all through that. We're going to learn a lot about how this not only performs on the trail, but how it compares to SRAM access and T type. We were lucky enough to have a couple guys from Shimano out here on the podcast, and they went on a deep dive all about the development of the Di2 drivetrain.

00:01:06:23 - 00:01:31:01
JARED
So check that episode out if you're interested in learning more about what it takes to develop a electronic drivetrain from scratch. So you're probably wondering, how does this compare to SRAM access and T type? Well, we're going to go through every single component from the shifter to the trailer and everything in between. And we're going to talk about how it compares, what we like, what we don't like, and is it worth it?

00:01:31:04 - 00:01:35:04
JARED
Oh yeah, it's worth it.

00:01:35:06 - 00:01:59:03
JARED
If you're strong enough. So in this Di2 ecosystem we have at the base level we have deore, then we have Deore XT. And we also have XTR which is what I have been riding right here. So they all have that classic Shimano shift quality and performance. But you know within those tiers you're going to notice just a difference in, you know, materials, weight, bling factor, all those things.

00:01:59:09 - 00:02:15:20
JARED
One thing that I think is, you know, pretty nice and thoughtful around it is that these are all pretty, nicely tiered and also very comparable to SRAM's or equivalent electronic drivetrains as well. Almost like bang for buck, dollar for dollar. Same price that you would find for SRAM. First off, we might as well start with the shifter.

00:02:15:20 - 00:02:41:18
JARED
And arguably my favoritest part of this whole ecosystem and this whole groupset. That is one thing that I feel like Shimano absolutely nailed with this Di2 groupset is the ergonomics of the shifter is so intuitive, and it feels exactly like a mechanical shifter, but with the just effortless shift paddles and tactile satisfying. I don't even know the words to describe it, but it's an extremely satisfying tactile experience when you shift through the gears.

00:02:41:20 - 00:02:58:05
JARED
And not only that, but these paddles here are fully adjustable in the angle, and I guess you call it the pitch. So that is a really nice way to just customize the feel of your shifter. And personally, right out of the box, it felt pretty great for me, and I really didn't spend a whole lot of time adjusting it.

00:02:58:07 - 00:03:21:22
JARED
And I think 99.9% of people, if not 100 of people, will put this on their bike and feel very intuitive. Whether it's downshifting up, shifting whatever you want to call it, it feels super intuitive. And, you know, I would say that is one thing that Shimano kind of one upped over SRAM is that with the pods, I don't even know how many times you hop on a bike with access, but everybody has their own personal preference about which button does which.

00:03:22:04 - 00:03:36:10
JARED
And, you know, it can take a little while to get used to whatever bike you hop on. You know, here we have bunch of demo bikes with access, and it seems like every single one is set up in a different way. So that was one great thing I think about Di2 is that they absolutely nailed the shifter ergonomics.

00:03:36:16 - 00:04:01:11
JARED
And whether you get Deore, XT or XTR, they all have that same amazing shifter paddle orientation. But one thing with the base level deore is that you do not get the adjustability in the shifter, but you know it is what it is, and I think you probably be happy with the standard configuration anyways. So moving back to the trailer, we have our battery inside here, which comes out just like that.

00:04:01:11 - 00:04:16:09
JARED
It's covered with the cover. It is not like super watertight, but I mean, you're not really supposed to be blasting this thing of water or really like submerging it for a long time anyways. And I haven't really found any water to be found in there after washing the bike or riding through the rain or mud or anything like that.

00:04:16:09 - 00:04:41:06
JARED
Actually does a great job of keeping the elements out, which is really nice. And I've also found the battery life to last a really long time as well. I have had zero instances of, you know, being caught as well out on the trail with a dead trailer or shifter for that matter. And I feel like that is one of the main concerns that people, you know, really think about or, you know, a lot of haters talk about is like of so many people have had single speed down on the trail.

00:04:41:06 - 00:05:01:01
JARED
Well, you know what never happened to me with this? For what it's worth, I'm also pretty cognizant of charging it. And every couple of weeks I'll throw it on the charger. And it has been amazing battery life. So that is awesome. And while we're on the subject of the trailer, you know it also has the nice feature of reacting to.

00:05:01:03 - 00:05:21:15
JARED
And reacting to impacts where it will rebound and go back to the original position. I really try not to smash it on things and I haven't really hit it with any rocks, so I'm trying not to do that as most bike riders probably are as well. You're probably not trying to hit your bike into rocks. So, for what it's worth, you know, I haven't had to test that, which I think is a good thing.

00:05:21:17 - 00:05:48:01
JARED
The responsiveness, the quick action of the trailer and the shifts is absolutely phenomenal. And that is one thing. I also think that XR or Di2 in general has a little leg up over SRAM in that regard. What I think it personally, kind of what I've come up with is like it has the shifting speed of the original SRAM AXS, but it has it's it's almost the shifting, you know, smoothness under load as T type.

00:05:48:03 - 00:06:10:13
JARED
It's not it's not as smooth, but it is almost as smooth as T type. The other thing to note about this trailer, compared to other Shimano trailers and SRAM, is that the clutch design has been changed, so there's no longer like a traditional clutch. It's more of a spring loaded action here, which is yet to be determined. The durability and longevity of those springs.

00:06:10:18 - 00:06:33:19
JARED
I think that the shorter cage trailer has, you know, it works a little bit better. This clutch design works a little bit better with the truck cage earlier, and you don't get as much chain slap, perhaps as the larger cassette and longer cage trailer. That's just my own personal experience. I have been running the shorter cage here with the 9 to 45 cassette, and it shifts really quickly and nicely and under load.

00:06:33:19 - 00:06:49:06
JARED
It's phenomenal. I haven't had any complaints. With that said to the cassette, they do offer two different versions. This is the 9 to 45, but they also have the 10 to 51 tooth cassette. That is another really nice thing is you can simply swap the lower cage and swap your cassette, and you basically have two completely different drivetrain configurations.

00:06:49:06 - 00:07:10:06
JARED
So that is really nice because most of the drivetrains, you really just can't swap apart on your trailer and have a completely different configuration. Really. Honestly, my only other gripe is that I just love the one piece cassettes from SRAM. Just I feel like this design, it could be improved upon a little bit, just having to deal with individual cogs that just kind of like just makes me cringe.

00:07:10:06 - 00:07:32:14
JARED
A little bit. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it so much. But you know, it is what it is. And the fact that, it probably makes the manufacturing process a little bit easier. And also they are able to combine, you know, different elements like, you know, titanium, aluminum and stainless, whatever kind of optimize for weight in a way that, you know, one piece cassette, it's probably a lot more challenging to do in a manufacturing setting.

00:07:32:14 - 00:07:49:10
JARED
These cranks wheel me before it here to the cranks. I feel like this kind of style of crank that Shimano is using with the kind of the pinch bolts on the non drive side, they've been doing that for as long as I can remember. But maybe they have improved some construction here. So these are still a hollow forged crank.

00:07:49:10 - 00:08:08:02
JARED
This is the XC version, 165 millimeter cranks, which I have really been enjoying. The only qualm I have is the kind of need a special tool to install a the chainring from the back versus kind of like a eight bolt or three bolt configuration from SRAM, where you would just need a T25 Torx pros and cons there.

00:08:08:02 - 00:08:26:04
JARED
You obviously you rarely need to mess with that, but if you're swapping chainrings, this is one thing to know. You just need that special tool. But yeah, with that said, I mean, this has been a phenomenal drivetrain. I don't foresee myself taking it off anytime soon. It really has been a pleasure to use the shifter is truly something that I just I love to use.

00:08:26:06 - 00:08:53:09
JARED
It is very ergonomically pleasing and satisfying to use there. The trailer is super quick, lightning fast shifts as we kind of made a video on Instagram a little while back. That kind of show the difference between t type and Di2 shifting speeds. So it is super fast. It's really, really impressive under load, especially when you are climbing. I almost feel like it shifts better when you are climbing and you're under load, and it just kind of very smoothly takes off the shifts.

00:08:53:13 - 00:09:16:16
JARED
Yeah, I mean, what can I say? It's Shimano's top tier electronic groupset. Like you would hope that it performs flawlessly. Speaking of performing flawlessly, I haven't had to adjust it at all since I installed it, which is kind of huge, right? Like one thing I feel like, with with AXS, you know, and t type honestly, is that I feel like, you know, you're kind of you're kind of maybe always going back to like adjust and trim it a little bit.

00:09:16:18 - 00:09:37:03
JARED
Whereas I bolted this on the bike and I have not had to touch it. It has been amazing. It shifts phenomenally. If you have Shimano mechanical on your bike and you've been wanting an electronic drivetrain, this is an absolutely fabulous way to upgrade your drivetrain. You know, the Deore, I think it's, you know, maybe 600 or 700 bucks for that upgrade.

00:09:37:04 - 00:09:59:03
JARED
Obviously it goes up from there. And with that, you get that amazing shifting performance, which I mean, you probably are already familiar with if you have Shimano on your bike. Another person who this would be great for is if you have a bike where you really don't want to mess with the internal routing, like my ASR here, it does not have to even tube, and the less cables inside this thing, the better to make noise and just to fiddle with or adjust whatever.

00:09:59:03 - 00:10:22:14
JARED
There's also a lot of other bikes coming out right now that don't have an option for internal routing for the drivetrain, like the specialized stem jumper. Also, the top tier Yeti ASR. It's nice to have the option here. You know, the Yeti released their anniversary bikes a little while back with the ultimate frame, and those don't have a port for mechanical drivetrain, so this is a great option for a bike like that.

00:10:22:18 - 00:10:37:18
JARED
Let me know what you guys think in the comments. If you think it's worth it to have an electronic drivetrain, or if you already have it and you love it, would you ever go back? Are you sold on it? So I think that just about wraps this one up. Thank you guys so much for tuning in. We truly do appreciate it.

00:10:37:20 - 00:10:39:11
JARED
We'll see you in the next one. Cheerio.
