Shimano Deore XT 8220 brakes review: easy install, adjustable levers, powerful stopping, and smooth modulation on steep trails. See what our customer thinks!
Over the past year, I set out to build a versatile mountain bike. When ordering parts, I cheaped out and picked a different brand of brakes. After installing everything, I took my new build to the trails on my Forbidden Druid. On a steep slope, I grabbed the brakes and barely stopped in time. When my life flashed before my eyes, I knew I should have gone with what I wanted from the start: the Shimano Deore XT 8220 brakes.
I knew the price would be higher, but you get what you pay for, and I'm definitely broke now. From the start, the package was well-protected and organized, which gave me confidence in the product’s integrity. Ten out of ten for shipping and packaging.
Cosmetics matter, because who doesn’t want their bike to look bada**. The brakes have a sleek, aerodynamic look that keeps the cockpit tidy. Hose routing along the bars is controlled and disappears cleanly into the frame. The caliper’s gray finish looks great.
Installation was hassle-free. The kit includes more than enough hose, so fitting it to the Forbidden Druid was simple. I shortened the hoses to my liking for a flush appearance. Bleeding was straightforward in three steps with Shimano’s low viscosity mineral oil instead of corrosive DOT fluid. Expelling air was quick thanks to the proven design.
I also appreciated the adjustable brake lever. It is a great feature for smaller-handed riders with shorter reach. My 5'3" girlfriend tried them and had no problem pulling the lever comfortably.
I did bed the brakes, which is standard practice. Once that was finished, I took the Druid back to the trails with the new Shimano Deore XT 8220 brakes. I felt confident pushing my boundaries because these brakes deliver powerful stopping without overheating. The finned pads and Shimano’s low viscosity mineral oil help manage heat.
The new lever design provides excellent braking modulation or a quick bite, depending on your preference and setup. The result is predictable power, strong control, and confidence when things get steep.
