Few tires are more notable in mountain biking than the Maxxis Minions. With different casings, compounds, and sizings, there's one for just about every application. Fellow rider, John Tiers, recently put some fresh rubber on his trusty steed and gives us his review. Check it out!
So I finally made the decision to lose the tubes and switch to tubeless, but with all the tires on the market I didn’t know where to start. After looking all over the internet I came across Worldwide Cyclery and Jeff with all the great videos to help clear things up. After watching a few of Jeff’s videos and reading some blogs I had made my decision. I decided to go with Maxxis Minion downhill front (DHF) upfront and Maxxis Minion downhill rear (DHR II) in the rear. After deciding the tires, I realized my research wasn’t done now I had to decide what tire casing was right for me. Do I need a heavy-duty casing for big hits but with a weight disadvantage or could I get by with the light faster rolling tires while sacrificing protection. Again, Jeff had all the answers and cleared everything up. I bought the 27.5 x2.6 60 TPI EXO dual compound because they are on the more heavy-duty side.
After installing the tires on my Commencal Meta Am hardtail I could immediately tell a difference. Going from running 25- 30 psi with my tubes and now running less than 20 psi with my tubeless really does wonders on a hardtail. The Maxxis Minion tires have plenty of grip on the turns and can definitely take a beating. After switching tires I can tell that I am faster on the bike and all the grip the tires have really help build confidence when taking those sharp turns. I have only put about 50 miles on the tires so far but having ridden many other mountain bike tires the tires seem to be the best of the best and top-notch. I have been recommending these tires to my friends who are looking for tires.
What more can I say, they perform like Maxxis tires. Thanks to Jeff and Worldwide Cyclery for all the help and great customer service getting the products out fast and can’t forget the free shipping on all orders. I hope this review helps at least one person to help decide on tires for their mountain bike. All that being said get out and ride!
Maxxis Minion tires are likely one of the most popular mountain bike tires out there. Is one really better than the other? You'll have to check out our full review to find out!
