Is it time for you to upgrade the rear shock on your mountain bike? Here in this review, our customer Christopher upgrades his Fox Float X rear shock with the Fox Float X2 with a 2 position compression lever adjust. The Float X2 Factory Series shock features a 4-way adjustable damper with high-speed compression, low-speed compression, high-speed rebound, and low-speed rebound adjustments available. The spring curve is also adjustable with different air volume spacers that can be fitted within the air can. Let's see what Christopher thinks about his new shock!

Introduction

I’ve always been a fan of Fox suspension and the X2 is a shock I’d had my eye on since its launch in 2016. I finally took the plunge and replaced the FLOAT X on my Scott Genius 700 as I’d been thinking about moving to a newer generation shock for a while, primarily to refresh the back end of the bike and breathe new life into the Genius. Other contenders were the Cane Creek DB IL but ultimately the X2 won-out for a solid reputation when it comes to reliability plus excellent back-up from Fox in the UK.

Initial Impressions

First impressions on taking it out of the box were ‘wow – this really is one heck of a shock!’ A supersize air can and lots of adjustments to play with which will keep my ShockWiz busy for the next few rides. One of the main things that always impresses me with Fox products and keeps me coming back is the quality of the finish and the Fox Float X2 certainly didn’t disappoint. Mounting was easy and I went with the Fox guidelines on all 4 damping adjustments and then fitted the ShockWiz and went through calibration.

Final Thoughts

I’ve been running the X2 now for just over a month and have done around 4 rides and in terms of feel, the stand-out feature is just how plush and coil-like the shock feels. There’s still more set-up to be done to get the shock dialed-in, but that’s no issue as these things should never be rushed! So far I have added another volume spacer to the air can since the initial ride and have also increased air pressure from 175 to 200psi.

It definitely out-performs the old shock and it has shown-up that my forks are not quite as plush as I’d like so they’re now next on the upgrade list!
