Derby rims were born because of a man looking to create a better mountain bike rim that was wide, stiff, and lightweight. Derby rims have been around since 2012 and have now become a popular choice for riders looking for a custom built wheelset featuring a wide profile carbon rim. The name Derby comes from the game, foot down derby, where the object of the game is to keep both feet off the ground with 40 others riders are trying to do the same in a relatively tight space. Last rider standing wins! This fun having spirit is reflected in the lifestyle of the brand Derby, whose goal is to create the best carbon rims available. We think they are killer!
The largest benefit to using a wider rim is how the wide rim changes the profile of your tire. The wider rim gives your tire a more square shape compared to a more rounded profile. This means that on average, there will be of your tire in contact with the ground. The cornering knobs will also be at a slightly different angle giving the rider a more consistent feeling while cornering.
Some other benefits to using a wider rim, and especially with the Derby rims, are increased tire volume, increased traction and weight savings. Click here for a full breakdown on the benefits to using wider rims.
Some of the main benefits to using carbon rims are their inability to flatspot, they easily maintain equal spoke tension, and can be very strong and stiff while remaining lightweight. Here at Worldwide Cyclery, we believe that the Derby rims do all of those things exceptionally well! Click here for a more detailed review on the pros and cons to using carbon rims.
Below is the breakdown for each of the rim models that Derby offers. All of Derby rims are handmade from UD carbon fiber. All of the mountain options can be configured as either 28 or 32 spoke wheelsets. The road and cyclecross options can be configured as either 20, 24, 28 or 32 spoke wheelsets.
