This review on the new Race Face Next SL G4 crankset is written by one of our many passionate Race Face customers. The only way to upgrade your old Next SL cranks is with the lighter and stronger Next SL G4 cranks!
--
Well, the good ol’ boys and gals at Race Face, never content with sitting on their massive laurels, have done it again in creating masterful carbon fiber crank arms that are lighter than their predecessor, Race Face Next SL. So, what’s next Race Face? The new SL G4 carbon fiber cranks without chainring, weigh in at 382.4 grams that are 10-11 grams lighter, given that carbon fiber components can vary by +/- 10%. Add on your favorite sized chainring, I use their Cinch Direct Mount Chainrings, which are offered in size ranges from 24T toddler teeth to monstrous 42T behemoth beast teeth suited to trail stompin’, chompin’, raging animals, and you are ready to roll. In addition, Race Face offers these cranks in several decal colors, including: stealth black, blue, red, orange, and silver. They are compatible with 170mm and 190mm x 30mm spindles, and can be outfitted with spiders that will fit “boost-type” frames; gotta love wider tires, right? These arms are available in either 170mm or 175mm lengths. In addition, you can dress them up in crank boots that come in various colors including: orange, black, red, blue, and yellow. While adding color to your bike, they also protect the ends from rock-strikes.
I’m running the original Next SL’s (the past 2 years) and the lighter Next SL G4’s this year and both models perform comparably. Stiff, reliable, and oh so cool, your forward motion will not be compromised by lateral motion, it’s full speed ahead, whatever your mountain biking preference, be it fat bike, suspension bike, or hardtail, these cranks will power them all. Race Face designed these cranks for future compatibility by allowing for removable axle's by the mere twist of a 16mm Allen wrench. Some individuals complain about the durability of Race Face’s bottom bracket. However, I grease mine 3-4 times a year, adjust them properly, and have no issues with them. They have never creaked nor felt loose. Yet for individuals that demand the finest bottom brackets, companies like Chris King and Hope have introduced their world class BB’s for 30mm spindle diameters, and in a wealth of color choices. For me, the weight savings, stiffness, and quality are reason enough to purchase these cranks.
