Race Face’s Atlas 35 Stem allows users to insert 35mm diameter handlebars onto traditional 1-1/8” diameter steerer tubes on the forks of their bicycles. (The larger diameter carbon fiber handlebars are stronger, yet lighter than common 31.8mm handlebars.) They are available in three stem lengths: 35mm, 50mm, and 65mm, which allow riders to customize fore or aft positioning within the bike’s cockpit. It’s machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and is lightweight at 141g (35mm), 160g (50mm), and 181g (65mm). My stems weighed 142.7g (35mm), 142.6g (35mm), and 142.6 (35mm) for three different bicycles. All stems have 0 rise, and oddly for Race Face, they are offered in black; no other color choices are available to date. The stem mounts to the steerer tube via two opposing bolts (5mm hex), while the handlebars are secured via four bolts (4mm hex) thru the laser-etched faceplate on the stem.

The 35mm diameter handlebar clamping capacity allows the usage of Race Face’s phenomenal SIXC, Atlas, Turbine, Aeffect R, Chester, or the ultralight Next handlebars. Some of these models are aluminum, while others are made from carbon fiber. Together, this setup provides an awesome riding experience. The Atlas stem is secure, stiff, and reliable, while the carbon fiber SIXC or Next handlebars dampen shock. I’ve been riding three bicycles with both the SIXC and Next handlebars in conjunction with the Atlas 35 stems and I couldn’t be happier with the beefy feel of the handlebars, their superb shock absorption, and the control afforded while riding the rocky, sandy, slithering Arizona desert and rock-infested mountainous trails.
