This review was written by Scott Lyman after installing a new headset on his most recent complete build. The Cane Creek 110-Series Headset turned out to be a perfect upgrade for his classic build, fitting his theme perfectly and giving him a smooth ride with that precise engineering Cane Creek has built their reputation around. Here is what Scott had to say. -- Cane Creek 110-Series = Total Radness!
Let me start off by saying, I've been a user of Cane Creek 40-series headsets over the years, and absolutely love them. They are simple to use, and are quite bulletproof to say the least. For one of my latest project builds, I planned on going with an old school retro, all silver parts theme. Unfortunately, the 40's only come in black, so I figured I'd spring for the 110-series since it comes in a silver colorway. The look it gave the bike turned out just freakin' perfect!
Craftsmanship on this beauty is rather top notch, and it's built to last; 110 years to be exact! I'd say Cane Creek definitely upped their game with this 110 series, and it definitely holds its own with Chris King, especially at this level. If you're running a tapered fork, then this will work perfect for it! Since I'm still stuck in “old school” mode, I just had to swap out to their standard 1-1/8 straight steer base-plate race for my non-sussy, rigid fork.
Wallet wise, the Cane Creek 110-Series Headset is a tad cheaper than Chris King. Now compared to their 40-series, they are about double the price!!! You do get a few color options to choose from, and that 110 year warranty. Oh, how does it perform you ask? Well, all I can say is, this thing is smoooooth like butter, no play what-so-ever! Talk about precision turning!
Furthermore, if you're going for that ultra-reliable bling factor, I’d say give the 110 a try!
