Servicing your hubs is crucial to keeping your bike rolling, and having the proper tools makes all the difference. Chris King makes some of the nicest hubs in the world, so it makes sense that their tools are also top notch. Pat recently rebuilt his hubs with their beautiful hub service tool, read on to find out more!
One man’s journey to buying a $188 bearing tool.
I love my local bike shop. I have spent close to $150 in the past 2 months to have them get several wheelsets rolling smoothly again. Then I bought a well-used wheelset with classic Chris King hubs. I called and found out that a hub service and an XD Driver install was a two-month wait and cost over $300 dollars. With a little research, I found out that I can get a Chris King ISO/Classic Hub Tool and the XD Driver for just a bit more. This means I can work on multiple Chris King hub sets and have a one hour turn around. Getting the Chris King Hub Tool was a no brainer at that point.
An added bonus to the purchase is the CK Hub Tool will pay for itself in just one post-winter service.
Initially, the confusing set of specialized discs was a bit overwhelming. YouTube tutorials reminded me of the obligatory scene in classic war movies where new recruits had to rebuild their battle rifles from sundry parts in 22.8 seconds. While I was impressed by the YouTube jockeys’ zippy hub abilities, the videos were not very instructive.
Finally, I looked at the directions on the Chris King site. The directions are thorough. It is strongly recommended that you familiarize yourself with the various parts of the CK Hub tool. Each is laser engraved with the part’s name.
Even a non-hub jockey like me can use this tool to pull, push and otherwise keep your Chris King hub happily buzzing along.
Please patronize your local bike shop. However, there are times when outfits like Worldwide Cyclery can hook you up. They were prompt and everything arrived in perfect shape. I plan on a modified approach to keeping my bikes going, shop both locally and using Worldwide Cyclery. Thanks for the service!
The Chris King Hub Service Tool is like having a machined adult-oriented toy. Only it is a real tool! It was ultimately a very, very easy tool to use.
