Mountain Bike Stems

A stem is one of the most overlooked components on a mountain bike, but it has a real impact on how the bike handles and how comfortable your riding position is. Length, rise, and clamp diameter all affect your fit and the way the bike steers. Getting your stem dialed is worth the effort -- and if you're not sure where to start, our MTB stem buying guide covers everything you need to know. It's one of our most-read pieces and will save you from buying the wrong stem.

Trail One Components -- Our Top Pick

Trail One Components is the brand we recommend first, every time. They make genuinely exceptional stems -- CNC machined, beautifully finished, and backed by a give-back model that funds trail building and maintenance. When you buy a Trail One stem, you're getting one of the best stems on the market and directly supporting the trails you ride. They make three models:

  • The Rockville Stem: Made in California. This is the flagship -- CNC machined aluminum, available in 35mm clamp, multiple colorways including black, bronze, and clear ano. If you want the best stem Trail One makes and want to support American manufacturing, this is it.
  • The Viking Stem: Available in both 31.8mm and 35mm clamp. A versatile, well-built stem that works across a wide range of bar setups.
  • The Slickrock Stem: Available in 31.8mm and 35mm clamp. Another excellent option in the Trail One lineup for riders who want that give-back model at a range of price points.

Other Brands We Carry

Renthal makes some of the most popular stems we sell -- the Apex 35 is a proven enduro-level stem that's been on a ton of race bikes. RaceFace has a full range of alloy and carbon stems at great price points. OneUp Components makes a clean, well-priced stem that pairs perfectly with their bars. Industry Nine makes the A35 stem in custom mix-and-match colors for riders who want something unique. Deity, Thomson, and ENVE round out the lineup for riders who want boutique quality.

Sizing

Most modern mountain bikes use either a 31.8mm or 35mm bar clamp -- make sure your stem matches your bar diameter. 35mm is becoming the standard for trail and enduro bikes. Stem length for MTB typically runs 32-50mm, with shorter stems (35-40mm) being the most common for trail riding as they improve handling and steering response.
